Greetings!
Thanksgiving was
full of family, food, friends
and...well, full pretty well describes
the whole experience! We ate so much!
Now, the tree is going up and the
fragrance of mistletoe and cloves fill
the air.
Pour yourself a cup of your choice
holiday java and snuggle up by the fire
while we give a taste test to some of my
favorite warm drinks and Christmas
CD's. I'll also introduce you to one of
my favorite dead authors for a good
holiday read! Also, we will think about
how to be overjoyed this season rather
than overwhelmed-that's in my Fresh
Grounded Thought. Spill the Beans
features a question voiced by a reader
that is tender and gives utterance to
how we have all felt when life gets
hard.
Hey, here's some news! You're the first
to know about the release of my new
devotional,
Fresh Grounded Faith, coming
out just in time for Christmas. It will
remind you of our monthly java time
together with daily fresh grounded
thoughts and an opportunity for you to
spill the beans. You can find out more
information about the book below in
Thanks-a-Latte.
So, take a coffee break before the
holiday hustle takes over and let's
enjoy some java time!
As always,
email me
your thoughts or questions. I'd love to
hear from you!
Your friend,

P.S.
Hundreds of you
have emailed me asking when my
video-based Bible study, Me,
Myself, and Lies: A Thought Closet Maker
(based on Self Talk, Soul Talk), will be
out. It will be on LifeWay shelves (and
at my store) in February. My Dr. Phil
will send you a special pre-order
announcement next week. Begin planning
your spring Bible studies with ME in
mind -- ME, Myself, and Lies.

Taste This! |
What I Am In To Lately
This month I was a part of the
LifeWay Women's Ministry Forum in
Nashville, TN, traveled to Ontario, Canada,
and had friends and family in our home for
Thanksgiving.
But the
highlight of November had to be our
Fresh Grounded Faith Conference here in
Springfield! About 1300 women
attended and my cup was definitely full with
God's kindness.
Lisa Whelchel was funny and deep as she
shared her story and insights,
Marcy Priest led worship beautifully,
and one of the most special surprises was
partnering with
Michael O'Brien. The women at the
conference were crazy about him! You really
must check out his
Something About Us CD--it is fabulous.
Speaking of CD's, I just popped Christmas
music into my CD player. Over the last few
weeks, I've had the privilege of partnering
with
Travis Cottrell and
Kathy Troccoli in ministry events, so
their Christmas CD's are getting the most
play! Travis' voice is clear and
compelling, and I love Kathy's jazzy take on
the Christmas classics.
While the
Christmas music is playing, I am sipping my
favorite holiday drink from
Starbucks - a Peppermint Mocha!
But, there are lots of marvelous holiday
drinks to choose from. The girls that make
up Jennifer Rothschild Ministries list these
as their favorites: Kathryn loves the Hot
Caramel Apple Spice, Valerie enjoys the
White Chocolate Peppermint Mocha, Karen (who
doesn't
drink coffee-can you believe she works with
us?) always orders the Signature Hot
Chocolate, and Susan goes for the Verona
Blend-black! Tracie likes the Mocha
Frappuccino and Julie is fond of the Java
Chip Frappucino. Robyne, who handles our
WomensMinistry.net newsletter orders a
decaf, low-fat Grande Latte with 1/2 pump of
sugar free vanilla. Around here we call it a
"why bother." So, grab one of your
girlfriends and head to
Starbucks!
On
your way to the coffee shop, stop by the
bookstore or library and pick up
Around the World in Eighty Days
by
Jules Verne. Verne is one of my
favorite dead authors!
He was born in France in 1828, was
a contemporary of Victor Hugo, and is famous
for his science fiction. Now, before you
get girlish thinking his novels are infused
with too much testosterone, let me just tell
you he is one of the most tender, relational
male authors I've ever read. It's also very
interesting to trace the brilliance of his
forward-thinking mind. In his novels, he
prophesied the invention of helicopters,
autos, submarines, internet, television and
space travel to name just a few! He really
fascinates me.
So give
these things a taste test:
1.
Michael O'Brien--Something
About Us
2.
Holiday drinks from
Starbucks
3.
Travis Cottrell--Ring
the Bells
4.
Kathy Trocolli--A
Sentimental Christmas
5.
Around the World in Eighty Days or
anything by
Jules Verne

Fresh Grounded Thoughts |
What God Has Been Teaching Me Lately
Christmas is just around the bend and most
of us are feeling that little tingle of
anticipation. We're shopping, decorating
and trying to keep our stress levels at
manageable proportions.
Preparing to
celebrate can bring joy, but turning on the
TV news can squelch any joy of the season.
The media is quick to point out why you
should worry rather than reminisce. They
remind you how tough our economy is rather
than refer to how blessed we are as a
nation. So, to protect your Christmas
from the bad news and bad moods that can
steal your joy, let's consider what joy is.
According to
James 1:2, joy is a mindset; a
perspective. James says, "Consider it all
joy..." Joy really is a way of viewing
life. One of the words in the Old Testament
that is translated into our English word
joy
means "a special goodness in the widest
sense." So,
how do we keep a joyful perspective and
experience that "special goodness" even when
things seem especially bad this year?
"What if we don't have enough money to buy
gifts?" "What if my husband loses his
job?" "What if taxes go up, the stock
market keeps going down, we keep bailing
out, and there's no money coming in?" Whew!
Can you really keep joy in your Christmas
when those are real possibilities and
realities?
The apostle Peter gives us practical tips
on gaining and keeping joy. "Do not be
surprised at the painful trial you are
suffering, as though something strange were
happening to you. But rejoice that you
participate in the sufferings of Christ, so
that you may be overjoyed when his glory is
revealed."
(1 Peter 4:12-13)
Peter first
tells us not to be surprised by the sorrow
or trial that can invade the Season.
"Don't be surprised," he says. In other
words, this has happened before; it most
likely will happen again. In
The Problem
of Pain,
C.S. Lewis says: "Tribulations cannot
cease until God either sees us remade or
sees that our remaking is now hopeless." So,
my friend, you know as well as I do--sorrow
and hard times will last as long as the
human race runs!
Peter tells us that instead of being
surprised, we should rejoice. To rejoice is
a verb. It's an action that is underpinned
by an attitude of a special goodness in the
widest sense!
To rejoice
means we wear the attitude of joy on our
countenances and engage in the action of
joy.
The result of choosing to rejoice even when
things are tough is that you will be
"overjoyed when His glory is revealed."
But the good news is His glory being
revealed isn't merely a future event
reserved for His second coming. It's a
daily event. His glory is revealed every
moment of every day if we simply choose to
observe it. His glory is revealed in
celebration and in sorrow. His glory is
revealed in children's faces and in
Christmas carols. His glory is revealed in
family gatherings and falling snow. His
glory is not only made clear in mangers, but
it can be evident in malls...if we are
looking for it. It's just up to us to notice
it. If we
aren't overjoyed, it may be because we
haven't begun to rejoice and notice His
glory. I don't know about you, but I
don't want to spend the next few weeks being
overwhelmed; I want to be overjoyed.
Jesus said that He came to give you abundant
life but "the thief came to steal and to
kill."
(John 10:10) The
enemy of your soul is the thief who will
steal your peace and kill your joy this
season if you aren't aware of his schemes.
He does use hard times and bad news, but the
best weapons he uses against us are the ones
we give him. Weapons like unforgiveness,
bitterness, or just plain negativity and
hopelessness. You can keep your joy and
overcome the evil one by not giving him any
weapons-by defeating him before he has a
chance to attack. Just rejoice, and look
for God's glory. You will find that your
willingness to rejoice will be the platform
upon which God's glory shines the
brightest.
Shine on sisters!
Well, that's
what's been percolating in me lately!

Spill the Beans |
You Ask It, I'll Answer It
Question:
In the past six months I have had more
medical problems besides retinits
pigmentosa, and the most important man in my
life, my father, passed away. Then my
childhood girlfriend (since three years old)
was murdered by her husband, and two more
deaths in the family. Now my cousin that I
am close too has M.S. Fear has set inside
me...and I haven't felt so separated from
the Lord. Where can I find Him???
Janine
Utah
Answer:
Oh Janine, you can find Him in your pain.
He never left. Sometimes the sorrow we feel
is so big that it makes God feel small. But
feelings are not always based on fact. God
never left so to find Him simply means you
seek Him. Seek Him in your pain. Seek Him
in your confusion. Seek Him in your
loneliness. He is there with you. You have
not cried one tear that He hasn't caught and
placed in His bottle. Just as He wept at
the tomb of His friend Lazarus, He wept with
you at your father's funeral. Perhaps your
tears have blurred your vision of Him and
your fear has clouded your ability to see
clearly that God is with you and will never
leave you.
This is when faith becomes the most real.
Faith is the evidence of what is not seen.
Faith isn't a feeling so don't wait for
tingles and emotions to well up and carry
you to a recognition of God's presence. His
presence is with you based on who He is, not
how we feel. Fear is a feeling, that's why
it's so powerful and makes you think it
represents ultimate reality. But, feelings
don't always represent ultimate truth and
they are not worthy of our ultimate trust.
Trust God more than your feelings, my
friend. Look for Him and you will see
Him. He will be the one with the tear
stained face and the nail scarred hands
reaching out to reassure you that He never
left.
And now
the beans are officially spilled!

Prayer Requests |
I need your prayers - if you have time,
will you please consider praying for me?
Here is my prayer list for this month:
1.
Thanks for praying for FGF in
Springfield. God was so kind to be with
us and empower us. Women were deeply
ministered to. Thank You Lord.
2.
We have at least over 70 new sisters in
Christ that joined the family of God
this past weekend in Alberta, Canada. I
had the privilege of partnering with
Sherwood Park Alliance Church for their
annual Christmas dinners. God moved and
I was there to be a part of their
harvest of souls. Thank You Lord! Pray
for our new sisters and Sherwood Park
Alliance Church as they seek to continue
to minister to the new believers.
3.
For me personally, I am asking God for
wisdom for the coming year. I want to
be wise in knowing where to speak, what
to write and how to live. May God
increase and I decrease.
As usual, thanks for partnering in
prayer with me. May we proceed on our
knees.

Dear friend,
As I write you
this month, there's a wood-burning
candle flickering and crackling right
beside me. It smells like fresh
biscotti and its fragrance is homey and
rich. Breathe in...can you smell it? I
wish you could, because if "peace" had a
fragrance, this would be it!
Pour yourself something warm and
peaceful to drink, or light a candle
that smells like "peace" to you and
settle in for our time together. This
month I'll clue you in on what
de-stresses me in Taste This, and in our
Fresh Grounded Thought we'll think about
another boundary-privacy.
There are also a lot of fun pictures in
Espresso Shots from the Bible Study
filming. Thanks for praying!
I'm glad you're hanging out with me for
our Java time.
As always,
email me
your thoughts or questions. I'd love to
hear from you!
Your friend,

Taste This! |
What I Am In To Lately
September
began as it does each year for the
Rothschilds-in Athens, Georgia at the
Georgia Bulldogs opening game.
We reunited with some of our dearest friends
and had a blast! As my friend Lori put it,
"[When we gather for the game] we are
leaving our stress behind." But she quickly
followed that statement with, "Actually, my
stress is my behind!"
Well, this month, I found two things to help
with stress--no matter the source!
The first is
my favorite...dark chocolate caramels and
toffee from
The Candy House here in Springfield.
These hand-dipped chocolates are
luxurious-the caramels have a hint of
amaretto, and the toffee melts in your
mouth! I have a personal theory that
eating chocolate slows down the aging
process. I may not be right, but do I dare
take the chance?
The second
surprising item I've found for stress
management is
niacinamide. Never heard of it?
It's one of the water-soluble B-complex
vitamins. Niacin, or nicotinic acid, is also
known as vitamin B-3. It was originally
recommended to me to help with acne, but I
have found it really seems to offer a little
more energy and makes me just feel a sense
of wellness. Besides, I'm feeling so good,
if it doesn't help the acne, I'm still
happy! See how well it works?
Of course, I really needed the chocolate and
the niacinamide because I was in "stress
mode" for the filming of the new Lifeway
"Me, Myself and Lies" Bible study. Thank
you for praying! It went so well, and I
can't wait for the final product in
February.
Lisa Welchel and
Kathy Trocolli joined me and filmed some
fun and insightful conversations. They did
such a great job, and you will love the
energy and openness they give--very cool.
Of course, I brought them chocolate,
too-chocolate covered niacinamide! Ha!
Phil surprised me by flying in Clayton
on Thursday night of the filming. Both
Connor and I were shocked and thrilled! It
was so special having him with us since it's
just been the three of us at home since he's
been at college.
The book I brought on the trip was
The House of the Seven Gables by
Nathaniel Hawthorne. I am not
quite finished with it yet, but am almost
done and I really don't want it to end. It's
that good. I just love the complicated and
subtly strong character, Hepzibah Pyncheon.
She's an unmarried older woman, a descendant
of the Pyncheon who built the house of the
title. She is from a high-society class, but
destitute. At the beginning of the novel,
she has opened a cent-shop to care for
herself and her brother. Hawthorne's
ability to peer right inside the intricately
knit human spirit and psyche astounds me. I
highly recommend this book.
Highlights
of this month included seeing Connor's art
displayed at our local art gallery--The
Bellewether Gallery of the Arts.
He made a squirmy, colorful octopus out of
clay. The three of us (me, Phil and Connor)
also enjoyed eating pizza on the roof of the
San Francisco Oven restaurant on several
unseasonably cool evenings, and I even
rearranged our living room on a whim! (That
will either reduce your stress or create
stress for your husband!)
So, no matter what you choose to do this
month, put "eat chocolate" at the top of
your
to-do list. If you do, you will get at
least one thing on your to-do list done for
sure!
Give these
things a taste test:
1.
Dark chocolate from
The Candy House.
2. Niacinamide
(Girls, I AM NOT a doctor! You should
always check
with your doctor before starting
something new like this.)
3.
The House of the Seven Gables by
Nathaniel Hawthorne.
4.
Rearrange a room in your home. It will give
you that extra little "zing" and freshen up
your perspective.

Fresh Grounded Thoughts |
What God Has Been Teaching Me Lately
Grab your favorite mug and pull up a chair!
This fresh grounded thought is the second
cup in a four-cup brew! If you remember, in
July, I introduced a series of fresh
grounded thoughts about boundaries.
Last month,
we thought about simplicity, and this month
we will consider a "privacy" boundary.
Geoffrey Fisher once wrote: "There is a
sacred realm of privacy for every man and
woman where he makes his choices and
decisions..."
Privacy is an important and often neglected
part of each of our lives. Privacy provides
time to commune with God. It makes a place
for just you and your Heavenly Father-space
for you to pray, listen to His Voice, and
read His Word. Privacy can safeguard your
personal creativity. Well-planned privacy
can invigorate your mind, body and spirit.
Well-used privacy can prepare you for public
service and participating in community.
Take a look at your day-timer, your Outlook
Express, or your wall calendar. How much
empty space is there for privacy to occur?
Here are
some questions to ask yourself as you begin
to consider if you need to tighten your
privacy boundary:
- Do I actively pursue and engage in
solitude?
- Is there any part of my life that I
feel it's my right to keep private?
- Can I say "no" to someone with out
explaining why or feeling guilty?
- Do I give myself the liberty to let
the phone ring or go to voice mail,
rather than allow it to disturb my
privacy?
Truly, not every woman needs this boundary;
some women need to expand their privacy zone
and let others in!
Privacy
should never occur at the expense of true
intimacy. If we draw the privacy
lines too tightly, we push out everyone else
and do not live out the communal life God
intended. It is possible to have intimate
friends and still have healthy boundaries of
privacy. "Friends will be much apart. They
will respect more each other's privacy than
their communion." (Henry David Thoreau)
In the midst of busy community life, full of
friends and family, most women must consider
if they have chosen to implement enough
healthy privacy.
So, what
does reasonable privacy look like?
The individual implementation of boundaries
may vary, but here are some basic privacy
principles to apply:
1. Generate
privacy; you create it.
My pastor has always called his daily time
with God, his "private time." I love that
phrase because what it says to me is that
not only is it legitimate to need and desire
privacy, but it is essential, because
privacy lends intimacy with God.
Unfortunately, privacy doesn't just happen;
we have to make it happen. Set a time for
you to have daily privacy and choose which
areas of your life are to be private.
Private times could be early mornings,
afternoon walks, occasions with friends, or
family dinners. Private areas of your life
may be personal family information, personal
convictions, or the reasons for choices you
make. Privacy is necessary; you create what
is private to you.
2. Guard
your privacy; you protect it.
Because private time with my Heavenly
Father, friends or family is something I try
to create, I protect it! When I am visiting
with a friend or talking to a family member,
I will not pick up a buzzing telephone no
matter how loudly it chirps or how urgent it
sounds. To do so would invade the private
community created by my time with a loved
one. The ground is sacred when I am
engaging one-on-one with someone, and I
choose to create and protect a boundary
around our exchange.
We often place our needs last and put the
needs or wants of others ahead. But, in
doing so in an extreme fashion, we forfeit
giving our friends, families and community
our best.
Create privacy and protect it as if
neglecting to protect it will cause you
great harm...because it can. Don't allow
your privacy to be easily forfeited, for in
doing so, you forfeit the energy and
groundedness that comes from it.
3. Govern
your privacy; you manage it.
"Whatever games are played with us, we must
play no games with ourselves, but deal in
our privacy with the last honesty and
truth." (Ralph Waldo Emerson)
Your privacy is your business. If you must
say "no" in some areas sometime to maintain
your privacy, do so. But, manage that word
well. "No" is an appropriate word to say,
but it must be spoken with wisdom and God's
Spirit as its guide. So, be a good manager
of it. Private areas of our lives and
private times of our lives are intended to
strengthen and grow us. Don't let your
privacy be a time of mental or spiritual
idleness; fill your privacy with that which
adds to your life, not subtracts from it.
Never let privacy be a veiled excuse for
selfishness either. Our privacy is
ultimately for us to meet with God, know
ourselves better, and refresh our spirits so
we can give and serve with renewed vigor.
Well, that's
what's been percolating in me lately!

Spill the Beans |
You Ask It, I'll Answer It
Question:
I am legally blind with retinitis
pigmentosa. I have spent lots of time
leaning how to do things like crochet, run
my home, take part in church activities, etc.
It has been a challenge, as you well know,
but God has helped me all the way. Many
times I am told, "You can't be too blind or
you couldn't do that" from sighted people,
and I have to admit it hurts some. With all
of your accomplishments, do you get that
response and does it bother you, or am I
just being too sensitive or proud? How do
you respond to it?
Wanda
Glenwood, AR
Answer:
To be honest, I don't get many who say
things like that to my face, but there may
be some who say it behind my back! Ha!
I know that kind of comment hurts you.
Unfortunately, blindness, like any handicap,
causes more confusion than clarity for those
who spectate. I understand great levels of
function can coexist with great limits
because I live them! But, some people can't
or won't try to understand. So, here's what
I would say to you, dear sister:
1.
Tell the
truth. If it hurts you, tell them.
2.
Educate...don't
just emote! Help them understand how or why
you are able to do certain things without
seeing. Maybe they're just ignorant. No
need to get your feelings hurt over someone
who is clueless.
3.
Pray.
When you feel hurt or misunderstood, tell
Jesus--He knows what that feels like, too.
He will show you if you're being too
sensitive or prideful.
And finally,
4.
Don't quit!
Stay encouraged. Be a model of grace and
perseverance. Keep up the good work; I know
it's hard, but we are not of those who
shrink back! (Hebrews 10:39)
And now
the beans are officially spilled!

Prayer Requests |
I need your prayers - if you have time,
will you please consider praying for me?
Here is my prayer list for this month:
1.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for
praying for the Bible Study filming! I
know I told you thanks in my intro to
this letter and in Taste This...I just
want you to know I am so grateful! God
gave me clarity, energy and guidance.
He took care of all details. The crew
was magnificent; Lisa and Kathy were
superb. What can I say but thank you
and praise Him.
2.
I go to Nashville in early October to
record the song that will be featured on
the Bible Study video. Please pray for
Travis Cottrell who is producing the
song. He is a busy man. Pray that God
blesses him with creativity for the song
and personal peace and grace in his
life.
3.
We will also shoot a music video for the
song. Please ask God for ease in the
process and favorable shooting
conditions as we film. I so desire that
this project pleases Him and blesses
others in every way.
4.
Here's a big praise! The new gals in
the office are doing so well and really
managed things like pros while we were
gone for the filming. I thank God for
them and ask Him to bless them. My
assistant Kathryn shopped for the
filming clothes (not an easy task) and
spent four long days with me at the
shoot attending to all details with a
great attitude and boundless energy. I
tell you, I do not know how I could have
done it without her energy, loyalty and
helpfulness. I rarely mention her but
the way she lives and serves brings
blessing to me and praise to God and I
wanted you to lift up a thanks to God
for her and ask Him to protect and bless
her. We need each other, don't we?
Well,
that's the biggies. Thanks for praying
and know that I thank my God every time
I remember you.
