Dear friend,

I am so excited to send you the very first issue of Java with Jennifer - this is the same occasional email you received from me called Jennifer's Friends Update - but with a whole new design, and creative, fun sections. In “Fresh Brewed Thoughts” I’ll tell you what I recently learned about why Angels pay attention to you and me. As you “Taste This,” you’ll get a tour of my favorite room in my home, and I “Spill the Beans” about... well, you’ll see! Below is an interview I did with one of our staff to help clarify what you can expect each month.

I can't thank you enough for your support and interest in my ministry. God has been so good, and I am so looking forward to keeping in touch on a regular basis.

If you get the chance, I would just love to know what you think. Send me an email.

Grab your mug and enjoy!

Your friend,

What's Java All About

Faith: Lots of us subscribe to your WomensMinistry.Net eNewsletter. What inspired you to create Java with Jennifer?

Jennifer: I wish I could have a cup of coffee with all the friends I’ve met at my conferences, or by email, just so we could get to know each other. So, I created Java with Jennifer – it’s for my new and old friends I’ve met along the way! It’s more casual and intimate than the WomensMinistry.NET eNewsletter.

In fact WomensMinistry.NET is geared toward women in ministry - over 20,000 of them. Java is for friends who may or may not be involved in ministry. The way I like to think of it is like this; reading Java with Jennifer is like having a chat over coffee at Starbucks, just not quite as expensive and lots fewer calories!

Faith: I love the name “Java with Jennifer,” what can we expect each month?

Jennifer: The newsletter will include at least six sections.

First is “Taste This.” This is the “girl-talk” part of the letter! That means one month I might tell you about my shopping spree with Patsy Clairmont. Another month, I may tell you about my favorite CD, the book I’m reading, or my secret fantasy to be a ballet dancer. I want to give you a chance to taste something new, rich, and robust!

The “Fresh Brewed Thoughts“ section is where I’ll share with you what God is teaching me. It’s a nice blend of Christian thought, Bible study and personal devotion. If “Taste This” splashes around in the shallow end, “Fresh Brewed Thoughts” takes a dip into the deep end. I think you will like it! It will inspire you and make you think.

There will be a section called “Spill the Beans.” If you ask me a personal question, I’ll spill the beans. Want to know about my eating habits? Want to know about Dr. Phil? I’ll give you the real scoop about almost anything.

Here’s some fun. Each month in the “And the Grande Goes To” section, you’ll have a chance to win something from the store – a gift certificate, book, CD, etc.

“Espresso Shots” gives you some photos to flip through. My upcoming engagements can be found in “Coming to a Café Near You,” and “Thanks a Latte” is a place to find special offers for my special friends.

Taste This!

What I Am In To Lately
room of peace

Let me take you on a tour of my favorite room. I call it the Room of Peace. I converted our guest bedroom into my study a few years ago and quickly named it the Room of Peace!

The Room of Peace has several rules:

  1. No conflict! (This means no family discussions, disagreements, or disturbing emails are to occur in the Room of Peace.)
  2. No unapproved beverages! (No sodas. Only fine teas, coffee, and water are to be sipped slowly in the Room of Peace.)
  3. Leave refreshed! (Visitors must leave the Room of Peace in better spiritual, emotional, or mental condition than when they entered.)
The walls are taupe and the furniture has an espresso finish with pewter handles. It also has a red coffee table and drapes that feature red accents (even the room of peace needs a splash of passion!).

I keep a secret stash of dark chocolate in the room. A hazelnut coffee candle is always burning and my stereo plays calming, contemplative music. For example, right now, I am listening to Michael Card’s newest CD called the Hidden Face of God. My favorite song on it is called The Silence of God. It is moving and thought provoking.

If you look above my desk, you will see my “wall of faith” featuring pictures of people who inspire me because of their faithfulness and authenticity. Some of the faces displayed are James Dobson, Kay Arthur, Beth Moore, Travis Cottrell, my friend Karen, Chonda Pierce, Sandi Patty, Patsy Clairmont and many others.

Now, to the shelves which hold more photos and special books. Most of the books are signed by the authors, but my very favorite is The God I Love by Joni Erickson Tada. This book (in my opinion) is her finest. If you get a chance to hear her read it on tape or CD, you will be doubly blessed!

Proudly perched atop the shelves are three yellow stuffed ducks. They don’t compliment the decor at all, but they serve to remind me to, “Say farewell to ducks!” If you’ve heard me speak, you may remember the ducks in a row story.

My beloved, broken Lladro is displayed on the top shelf (she’s featured in Fingerprints of God). A pencil drawing of my alma mater, Palm Beach Atlantic University, where God did so much in my life, hangs on the wall by the door.

Last thing, an old book, All of the Women of the Bible, written in 1955 by Edith Deen (Harper and Brothers Publishers) sits above my computer. My mom bought it for me at a used book sale and I love it. It’s well worn, incredibly thorough, and inspiring. It reminds me that like my book, our lives are most valuable when they are well used, thorough and inspire others. Knowing that the content of my life enriches the understanding and growth in the life of another, I want to reflect the wear and tear of a well squandered life. Don’t you?

Well, that’s quite a mouth full!

So, give these three things a taste test:

1. The Hidden Face of God by Michael Card, 2006, Discovery House Music 2. The God I Love by Joni Eareckson Tada, 2003, Zondervan Publishing House 3. An old book that inspires you

What God Has Been Teaching Me Lately
jr image

Do you ever think about the fact that angels are watching you? Near misses and clear divine provisions remind us that we are not alone, but did you ever really consider the reason angels may be watching you? I listened to Luci Swindoll speak at the Columbus Women of Faith recently, and she mentioned something that captured my imagination.

Luci was explaining the word “manifold,” and, in doing so, she mentioned some verses in the New Testament where the word occurs. One such verse is Ephesians 3:10, and when I heard her read it, I was surprised by what it said about us and the angels. The verse says, “So that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places.”

Is it only me, or does that startle your thinking? Paul was saying we (the church) educate angels! What a wild thought.

It’s like we as believers are on some grand stage with angels gathered around in rows, watching us, taking notes, learning about God from what is happening in our lives. Even the Apostle Paul tells us girls that we should pay close attention to our dress and the way we treat our husbands... "because of the angels." (1 Corinthians 11:10) In other words, we have an audience!

It’s interesting to consider that the angels observe us to learn about God. Evidently, our lives provide a platform for the “manifold wisdom of God” to be revealed. That means, the multi-colored, multi- faceted wisdom of God.

As I thought about this, I couldn’t imagine what the angels needed to learn about God by observing earth, when heaven seemed to be the ultimate classroom! Think about it, the angels are exposed to the purity and holiness of God. They fall before His radiance crying holy, holy, holy! So, why are they looking to fallen earth, observing redeemed humans to see an aspect of God that they don’t comprehend in heaven? All I could come up with was that the angels must watch us because they are fascinated with the undeserved, unmerited love of Holy God poured out on us. Peter says in his first letter that our salvation is so mind boggling that the angels longed to look into these things. (1 Peter 1:12)

God’s intense love for us is just one facet of the manifold wisdom of God revealed through our lives. It must be that very love that startles and confounds the angels. It is in your life, in my life, that they see the “multi-colored" wisdom of God. So, if you are having a “blue” Monday, or if you experience a “red” hot passion, if you are “crystal” clear in the way you communicate, if you are living out your “golden” years, or if your sins were as “scarlet” and God has made them “white” as snow, your multi-colored life is a perfect platform for the multi-colored, manifold wisdom of God to show up! For me, it gives me one more source of motivation for my choices and behavior. Angels are watching me, and I want them to get a great picture of the love of God!

Well, that’s what’s been percolating in me lately!

Spill the Beans

You Ask It, I'll Answer It

Question: What is on your IPOD?

Answer: I am crazy about my IPOD! Because I am dependent on my 16 year old son to load it for me, I am still adding to my repertoire. Right now, I listen to Sara Groves, Michael Card, Amy Grant, Travis Cottrell, Karen Carpenter, and Keith Green, to name a few! As far as pod casts, Ravi Zacharias' "just thinking" is what I listen to most! And now, my friends, the "Beans" are officially spilled!
