Greetings!

Welcome to the February issue of Java with Jennifer - my monthly update for old and new friends.

Wow! Where has February gone? I've been engrossed in writing and traveling. I just finished the manuscript for my next book Self Talk, Soul Talk: How to Tell Yourself the Truth (September 2007). It's amazing how quickly the time seems to go when so much is happening. But I'm sure you understand the feeling. For all of you who find your life filled to the brim, kick back for a minute and take a coffee break with me.

As you Taste This, you'll learn about my new castaway friends. I've got some Fresh Brewed Thoughts about what amazes me and the angels. I'll also Spill the Beans by sharing with you who the most influential mentors in my life have been.

Please take a moment and read the Update on the Dr. Phil Show and the Billy Graham Television Special below. And, we are so happy to let you know my Bible study workbooks are now available in a format for the visually impaired. See the Taster's Choice section at the bottom of this newsletter for more information.

God has been so good, and I am looking forward to keeping in touch on a regular basis. If you get the chance, I would love to hear from you. Send me an email.

Grab your mug and enjoy!

Your friend,

Only God Could Orchestrate This

Most of you know God has opened the doors for me to be on the Dr. Phil Show (airing Wednesday, February 28 - corrected date) and the Billy Graham Television Special (airing March 3-11).

I hope you will tune-in, Tivo, or tape the show. But more importantly, I'm asking you to consider a few things you can do to extend the Kingdom impact..

  • Pray for the Viewers
  • Invite Your Friends to Pray
  • Email Dr. Phil Show

Pray for the Viewers
There will be 7-10 million viewers tuning in to the Dr. Phil Show and Billy Graham TV Special. We want thousands of friends praying for millions of viewers. We believe God will hear our collective prayers, and draw many to Himself.

Invite Your Friends to Pray
Would you consider copying the information below, pasting it in an email and sending it to your email list? We need prayer warriors.

Look for Christian author and speaker Jennifer Rothschild on the Dr. Phil Show, Wednesday, February 28, and the Billy Graham TV Special, March 3-11. Find previews and local listings at www.jenniferrothschild.com Jennifer is asking thousands to pray for the millions watching the Dr. Phil Show. Specifically, pray the words Jennifer has to share on the Dr. Phil Show will be a sweet "fragrance" of the love of God to those watching, and as a result, hundreds of thousands will be curious enough to tune in to the Billy Graham Television Special just days later - where they can drink from a deep well of Living Water presented through Jennifer, Patsy Clairmont, Dr. Graham and others. Only God could have orchestrated the timing of these events. We are asking God to do great things in the lives of viewers.

Taste This!

What I Am In To Lately
The Mysterious Island

I was interviewed by a reporter at a recent speaking event and she asked me what my hobbies were. I told her I loved to listen to books. When she asked, “What else do you enjoy?” I began to sweat! I couldn’t think of anything I enjoy as much as listening to books (except Starbucks)! I realized that I am a geek, a book worm, a nerd! I can’t answer the “hobbies” question because I only have one hobby! For that reason, I had a tough time giving you several things to taste this month because I’ve been absorbed in a new book! It’s called The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne and it was written in 1874.

The Mysterious Island is, in a sense, Jules Verne's sequel to his more famous book, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. I couldn’t believe I was so captivated by the book because there is absolutely no estrogen in it! The story opens in America during the civil war as several POW’s hijack a hot air balloon for a daring escape. From there, they wind up on a deserted island, with only their courage and ingenuity. While on this mysterious island, they construct a giant cave-house out of granite; establish a small, genteel civilization; adopt and domesticate a monkey; rescue a castaway; defeat pirates; and discover the mysterious Captain Nemo. Talk about testosterone! Eventually, the island explodes in a volcano eruption, and the castaways find themselves at sea hanging onto the last remaining boulder from which they are finally rescued! Whew!

The six cast-aways became my buddies for the month of February, so they joined me and Phil on our Valentines Day get-away! The eight of us went to Chateau on the Lake in Branson for one lovely day and night! As we arrived at this Castle in the Ozarks, we knew we’d found a resort destination unlike any other. From the moment you step into the 10-story atrium, you know luxury awaits. It was relaxing, peaceful, and just plain fun! Instead of eating dinner at the hotels restaurant though, we headed over to The Keeter Center for some fine dining. The Keeter Center is a part of College of the Ozarks - called Hard Work U by The Wall Street Journal. This fabulous college provides a tuition-free education to deserving young people who are willing to work for it.

Phil had ginger/sesame encrusted Salmon and I enjoyed bacon wrapped grilled shrimp with maple glaze. It was delicious and prepared and served by the C of O students. And no, I didn’t bring the cast aways to the restaurant. They stayed in the hotel!

So give these three things a taste test;

1. The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne

2. Go to a fun hotel like the Chateau for a night (and bring along a good book!)

3. Experience the offerings of one of your local colleges or university. It’s encouraging and enjoyable to support great college students!

What God Has Been Teaching Me Lately

What Amazes Angels and Me!

After the Civil War an itinerant atheist made his way across our nation preaching his anti-God message. He sought to convince His audiences that God simply did not exist. He touted his position and then ended each message by extending a challenge toward heaven. If there is a God, then certainly He is powerful enough to strike me dead right now.” His taunting and arrogant words were a defiant dare to God. After each scathing scream toward heaven, silence followed. The onlookers were hushed and from heaven there came no response.

The scoffer took the silence of heaven as ultimate proof of his argument. Yet, I believe such silence disproves the skeptic’s conclusion and further confirms God’s amazing power.

Imagine if God were to have sent thunder and lightning down upon the man; doing so would only prove that God had power over the elements. But a far more significant evidence of His power is that He displays power over Himself.

Here’s what I mean.

The fact that God chooses to forbear instead of destroy reveals a power you and I can’t even comprehend. To understand the power He possesses, it’s important to understand the nature of “the riches of His forbearance.” (Rom. 2:4) Forbearance is best understood as a picture.

Visualize the hand of God, lifted, ready to strike a just and deadly blow against the sinner. Just then, see how the other hand of God quickly rises to stop the strike by grasping the arm and pulling it back. In His restraint, He displays that He has power over Himself. That is far more magnificent than displaying power over created elements like thunder or lightning. He chooses not to act even though He could. He chooses to forbear.

It may be this single quality of forbearance that compels the angels to fall before God in awe. Think about it. It must take a lot to amaze angels!

They dwell in the splendor of heaven. They live in the presence of God. They are witness to all of heaven’s endeavors. They were there when their beloved Jesus burst into human history as a tiny baby. They were there when their dearly loved master was tempted by their arch enemy. They were there when death was annihilated by Jesus. They rolled away the stone! Do you think angels are amazed by human triumphs like skyscrapers or even the Great Pyramids? Do you think they marvel at Niagara Falls or the Grand Canyon? I rather doubt it. I think what must amaze angels is that a holy God who could act chooses not to act. The angels must marvel at the God who shows forbearance with longsuffering toward the self centered, short sighted man He lovingly created. The restraint of God’s power on our behalf is enough to send the angels to their knees in awe and admiration.

How could you and I respond with any less wonder? What a powerful and kind God who could or should, but chooses not to.

Now, consider that marvel as it applies to your own life. The same power God has to forbear is the same power He could exercise to heal. So, if he has the power, why doesn’t He always use it on our behalf; not just through restraint, but through active intervention? He forbears on our behalf, so why doesn’t He show His power by healing us, or always delivering us?

Oh, my friend, I know you are trying to understand His ways. I struggle with the same. I am fully confident that God could heal my blindness. Even though He has the power to, He doesn’t choose to exercise it in the way I would hope. But, if I plead for His power, then I must accept His authority that comes along with it.

You see, His power may be capable of bringing about healing to my eyes, but His authority may not deem it best.

I am learning to respectfully trust His authority as much as I trust His power. For it is the companionship of those two attributes that allow suffering, and at the same time, disallow punishment for our sin. Hard truths, I know. But if you begin your consideration from the vantage point of respectful trust, it will make the mystery of God’s restraint and forbearance a blessing to your heart rather than just baffling to your mind.

He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.”(Deuteronomy 32:4)

So, should God heal you and me just because He can? Should He deliver us just because He is able to? Should God hold you accountable for your sin just because He has the right to do so? Consider this with me. To embrace the concept of forbearance as it applies to our sins, yet, reject it as it applies to our suffering, is to reject part of the character of God. And if we don’t experience His wholeness, we will never experience our own.

Well, that’s what’s been percolating in me lately!

Spill the Beans

You Ask It, I'll Answer It

Question:

Who did God use to mentor you into your ministry and help you bring it into the ministry it is today?

Sincerely,

Phenicia M.

Answer:

Think of my ministry as a shelf of books; on either end are two book ends. Those two book ends are Beth Moore and Patsy Clairmont.
At the beginning of my ministry, it was Beth Moore who God used to mentor me. She was, and still is, a model of humility, skill, and wisdom for me. Over the years, she has been a cheerleader, calling me at random times to encourage and celebrate, and graciously recommending me and my bible studies to others. My introduction to Beth was the hand of God and what He used as that foundational book end.

Before I tell you about the last book end, you must know there are literally hundreds of pivotal people in between that God has used. These are people for whom I am truly grateful and people I deeply love. Sisters in Christ who prayed, fellow women in ministry who shared with me, writers, singers, pastors, and the list could go on and on!

But the last book end, the mentor today who teaches, grounds, and guides me, both by example and word is Patsy Clairmont. She has generously taken me under her wing and shared from her years of ministry experience, her deep well of wisdom and her incredible talent.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I am truly a turtle on a fence post. Do you remember her? She didn’t get there by herself, someone placed her there!

God placed me where I am and he used people like Beth, Patsy, and the hundreds of nameless heroes in between to do it!

And now, my friends, the "Beans" are officially spilled!
