Dear friend,
This morning, instead of coffee, I'm drinking my Earl Gray tea. Now, before you even think I'm reconsidering my love for coffee, let me assure you that I still love my java, but I brew my Earl Gray almost as strong as any cup o'joe. So whether I'm drinking coffee or hot tea, I have my energy to write!
This month, I achieved a couple personal deadlines with my new Bible study. Woohoo! I felt like blowing up a few balloons, hanging some streamers and throwing a small celebration. Instead, I think I took a nap.
Then, in the middle of the month, some girlfriends and I whisked off in the minivan for two days at the St. Louis Women of Faith. We laughed and learned, and I met up with some good pals like Patsy Clairmont and--oh, wait, I don't want to ruin the story. Read Taste This with me and I'll share the fun details. So grab your coffee (or your hot tea), girlfriend, and read on with me...
As always, email me your thoughts or questions. I'd love to hear from you!
Your friend,

What I Am In To Lately
This month, I took Java on the road! Six of us piled into our minivan and hit the road for the St. Louis Women of Faith. We shoved our luggage and chocolate into the van and drove in pouring rain with only one stop...and you guessed where...Starbucks! Even my non-coffee drinking friend, Kellie, got a "Java Chip!"

Entertainment on the road was provided by Julie as she told her "hair cutting" story while we headed east. Note that I didn't say where the hair was that she cut...you must watch the video to see why we needed to stop to go to the restroom and get Starbucks after laughing so hard at her story!
When we arrived in St. Louis, we met up with my favorite Eastland School co-ed. You will have to guess who she is...here are some hints: She was a Mouseketeer and the ultimate eighties diva, she's kissed George Clooney, she's authored more than ten books, and she's a woman of grace and I love her! Click here to find out. During lunch, we all talked about books we are reading, have read, and are considering. The list included, but was not limited to: The Shack, The Alchemist, and The Portrait of a Lady...which do you think I recommend the most?!
After lunch, we checked out the end of the Women of Faith pre-conference. We laughed at--I mean with--Anita Renfroe, were inspired and amazed by Patsy Clairmont, and listened to and learned from Jan Silvious.
After checking into our hotel in Union Station, we enjoyed the weekend in the Scottrade Center. The arena was filled with the voices of more than ten thousand women singing and laughing. Marilyn Meberg counseled women that God will never abandon them, Sheila Walsh encouraged us to pray, Sandi Patty shared about losing the 'layers,' and Patsy reminded us that God always sees us. The weekend was a double shot, extra hot, vinte brimming with FUN!
When I arrived home, I put my new CD Lisa gave me into my office CD player as I began to write this. Shannon Wexelberg's music filled my office and my heart. Her Faithful God CD is inviting, warm, deep and communicative. I really enjoyed her style and substance.
So give these things a taste test:
1. A Java Chip from Starbucks
2. Hyatt Regency at Union Station
3. Women of Faith conference in a city near you
4. Shannon Wexelberg CD's
Do NOT give these things a taste test:
1. Julie giving you a free haircut.
2. Julie near you with scissors.
3. Julie trimming your dog to save money at the groomers.
4. Julie trimming tags off your clothes.
5. Julie trimming your hedges.
6. Julie trimming anything you deem precious!

What God Has Been Teaching Me Lately
"...And they used brick for stone..."
You know, whenever we hear the word "they," we should ask, "Who are 'they' anyway?" So, when I began my Fresh Grounded Thought with "they used bricks for stone," you must have surely wondered who" they" are. "They" are the people in Genesis 11 who were on a pilgrimage to the land of Shinar to build a city with a great tower. I have been thinking about them because I realize we aren't very different from them.
"About one hundred years after the flood, people grew restless and wanted to make a name for themselves." (Gen 11:4)
When I read that, I pondered, "Didn't they already have a name? Wasn't it a name that represented God's provision and favor?" What is it about people--about us--that makes us want to make a name for ourselves?
The people in Genesis 11 started their name-making project by constructing bricks. Perhaps the land of Shinar didn't have enough stones to build a tower. Or perhaps the people were so determined to make a name for themselves that they chose to create the building blocks themselves rather than use the stones that God provided. I can see them stooped over, stirring, forming, sweating, and patting mud, grime, and slime. Finally a brick is formed.
I imagine one of the descendants of Nimrod taking a piece of firm straw and proudly etching his name in the brick, and then placing it into a pile of other bricks, all bearing the names of those who formed them. The bricks were masterfully placed together to form a colossal tower that history remembers as the Tower of Babel.
I only imagine that their names were etched on the bricks; there isn't any historical evidence of such action, but think about it...the whole purpose of erecting the tower was to make a name for the people. Doesn't it seem slightly plausible that the brick makers left their marks--kind of like kids do in wet cement? It seems possible to me because I think that's human nature. Hmmm...
We erect towers of self-importance, one brick at a time. Our bricks read "professional" or "married" or "pretty" or "smart." We strive to find our own significance from bricks we make and names we take. I want to be of the people who say, "No bricks!" God has made us living stones and given us new names.
Peter said, "You [Christians] yourselves, like living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." (1 Peter 2:5)
God doesn't want towers; He wants "a spiritual house." Instead of just accumulating the transient, temporal things in our lives and using them to build a tower of pride and make a name for ourselves, may we use what God says we are--living stones--and build a spiritual sacrifice. On you, His living stone, He wrote "forgiven" and "valuable" and "dearly loved" and "called." Recognition of God's name for us and being satisfied with and humbled by His calling gives us all we need to build our lives.
On the plane of Shinar, the people built a tower, brick by brick, with the intent of reaching heaven. No matter how great their efforts nor how brilliant their endeavor, their tower could never be high enough. Even at its soaring height, the Lord still had to "come down" to the tower. (Gen 11:5) That's just how it is and forever will be! We can attempt to build a name for ourselves and try our best to tower above others to make ourselves feel significant. Some of us even try to erect our towers to somehow reach and please God. But our labors will always fall short. Our grand efforts of vain pride only expose our smallness.
I seek to solidify in my own mind and heart that what God did in making a name for you and me is utterly sufficient and far superior to anything we could ever do to make a name for ourselves. Our greatest endeavor to reach Him will always fall short.
The beauty, though, is He does come down. He made us living stones with new names so we would have something with which to build sacrificial lives to Him.
So, what name are you seeking to write? Are you making bricks with which to build your life or are you content to be a living stone, wearing the name He gave you?
Well, that's what's been percolating in me lately! |

You Ask It, I'll Answer It
Question: Could you please share some tips on bonding and forming tighter friendships?
- Thank you, Marina
Answer: This is a great question because it seems simple, but actually the answer could constitute a hefty manuscript! But I will give you my first couple of thoughts about this.
Thought 1: Honesty. To me, truthfulness is the foundation of any deep friendship. First, discern trustworthiness in your potential friend, and then decide to take a risk and be yourself. It will encourage your friend to do the same. As time passes, wisdom grows and confidence is established. People are too valuable, and life is too important to be fake, insincere, or have mixed motives in choosing friends. Give the honor of personal honesty to those you call friend.
Thought 2: Time. Those of us who are busy tout the merits of "quality" time because we have very little "quantity" time to dedicate to friendships! But truthfully, quantity is as important as quality. Emails, phone calls, and visits all add up to make for lots of different ways to spend time together. And when the quantity of time is full of quality interactions, you are on the road to a deeper bond and a tighter friendship. There really is no substitute for time.
Thought 3: Other-centeredness. This means focusing on meeting your friend's needs rather than simply having your own needs met. Some of the best friendships I have are with women with whom I share very few "surface" things in common. I have appreciated our differences as I have learned to focus on them, study them and allow their significance to enhance my own.
And now the beans are officially spilled!

| Prayer Requests |
I need your prayers - if you have time, will you please consider praying for me? Here is my prayer list for June:
It seems like I have the same requests again this month! It's not that God isn't answering; it's just that these requests are seasonal!! So thanks for continuing to pray. I am truly grateful.
1. The calendar is moving quickly toward Clayton leaving for college. Lots to do, lots to feel, lots to be grateful for! Please pray for wisdom for him as he solidifies his schedule and God's best for his future.
2. Yes, I am still working on the LifeWay Bible study and the Fresh Grounded Faith book! I am so grateful for prayers of protection for the messages and that God would guide each of us involved ...Dale, Joyce, Carolyn, Larry...and countless others. I may be the name on the front of the books, but there are many names that play integral roles in multiplying the messages. May God sweetly bless each of them.
3. Fresh Grounded Faith Conferences always need the prayers of the faithful! We so want these Kingdom-minded conferences to impact women deeply. May His Hand of Favor rest on each part of the planning and each person involved.
Thanks for your prayers...
