She greeted me when I walked into the cafeteria on Parents’ Day. Our oldest son was a freshman in college and this was the first time after dropping him off that we’d been back to visit. We’d met faculty, his resident director, and lots of his new friends. So when this woman greeted me, I asked, “Tell me who you are?”

She hesitated. I wondered if I should know her? I imagine she looked down and saw my white cane and realized I couldn’t see her, and that’s probably why she answered in a voice as warm and inviting as dark hot chocolate, “Oh, Ma’am. I’m nobody. I just clean tables.”

“You are not a nobody! You are not just a table cleaner!” I told her. “I’m Jennifer. What’s your name?” She laughed and told me. I thought to myself, “Nobody is a nobody!”

Nobody is just a table cleaner. Or just a mom. Or just a clerk or just a CPA or just a… anything!

Now you can watch Fresh Grounded Faith from anywhere! Join me, Liz Curtis Higgs, and Michael O’Brien On Demand through February 6th. Find all the details here.

But we often find ourselves in places or seasons of life where we feel like a nobody. We don’t realize we matter and that what we do matters. But girl, everything you do matters because we women have incredible influence!

Everything you do matters because women have incredible influence!

Here are three reasons why:

1. You’re setting the tone
Because women tend to be more intuitive, we have an uncanny ability to read the tone in a room! Women can walk in and know immediately that something is wrong or sense a hostile undertow. But, just as a woman can sense the tone of a situation, she can also set the tone. A smile, some well-chosen words, or wisely timed silence can change the whole atmosphere. Whether you know it or not, you are like a thermostat when it comes to setting the tone. What you do, what you say, how you respond — all set the standard in your home or office.
When you touch someone’s life, you touch eternity. [Click to Tweet]
So, ask yourself, “If I’m a thermostat, what is the temperature I’m setting?” Is it warmth and acceptance? Is it positivity and peace? Then, stand up tall sister, chin up and realize that you have incredible influence in setting the tone, so set your mind on the truth of who you are and live like it!
Women set the tone and shape the future. [Click to Tweet]

2. You’re sending a message
Women say so much even before we open our mouths! Like sonar, we transmit approval or judgment, love or rejection, positivity or negativity. It’s as if our emotions serve as a pony express delivering life-shaping messages to all we encounter. Often, we transmit the same messages we have received. If we have received the message that we are good or smart or worthy, we transmit that same message to our friends, families, and those in our work places. But, if we have received unkind or untrue or damaging messages, if we don’t think about it, we will transmit the same dysfunctional messages to those in our spheres of influence.
Everything you do makes an impact because you are a woman of influence. [Click to Tweet]
Ask yourself, “What message am I sending with my life?” Your message matters. If you are sending a negative or dysfunctional message to others, you don’t have to. Instead of transmitting wrong messages, ask God to transform that message into truth. Then, train yourself to trust the truth. Live that message and you will give that message to others. Watch how God can transform you and the people in your world!

3. You’re shaping the future
Women don’t just touch runny noses on chubby faces. Women don’t just touch computer keyboards, cash registers, or blood pressure cuffs. Women touch eternity. Everything you do can make an eternal impact on someone’s life and in our world.
When you live God’s message of truth, you leave His message of truth in other’s lives. [Click to Tweet]
Are you teaching a classroom full of students? You are shaping the future. Are you leading a team of professionals to complete a big project? You are shaping the future. Are you at home surrounded by toys and kids? You, my friend, are shaping the future.

It may seem like the daily tasks are just that – tasks. But, the reality is that each day, each moment, you have the opportunity to touch lives and make an eternal impact. And speaking of making an eternal impact, I’m so proud to show off some women who are shaping the future in their little corners of our big world! They are the womensministry.net 40 Under 40 women of 2016!

Check out these 40 women under 40 who are making a difference in our world! [Click to Tweet]

I am so inspired by them and I know you will be encouraged as you meet each of these 40 future shapers too! You just have to see the video I included and get fired up about what God is doing just like I am.

No matter what you do, sister, you matter and what you do today matters. So, next time you feel like a nobody, remember, you are the somebody God wants to use to set a tone of love and acceptance, so send messages of truth and shape the future for good.

I know her. You know her. She’s the woman who is pouring her life into others or a cause or a ministry. She’s the woman who brings light into this dark world.

She may be in prison ministry, or working at a homeless shelter, or leading a women’s ministry at her church or leading women across the globe in an online Bible study.

Women who serve others may do it in a million different ways, but they have one thing in common- they need encouragement!

Oh girl, we all do!

In fact, to “encourage” someone means you grant them courage. Literally.

The word encourage comes from the old French word, “encoragier” which means to make strong, add strength, or hearten.

The woman you’re thinking of is probably typically on the giving end of encouragement but I guarantee you she needs someone to grant her courage as well. She may feel weak, tired, or even disheartened, and your encouragement can give her the boost she needs.

So, how can you encourage her?

1. Tell Her

A really nice woman at one of my recent events said, “I know you hear this all the time but I wanted you to know that your words really helped me.” She was so kind to tell me that God used something I said to minister to her. But, what’s interesting is the first part of her sentence – “I know you hear this all the time…”

We assume that those serving in ministry hear “all the time” how much their work means to others. So, we don’t tell her thanks or “great job” because we think she hears it on a regular basis. Sister, she probably doesn’t! And, she probably can’t hear it too much because there is an annoying voice in her brain that is telling her all that she is doing wrong, she isn’t measuring up and her long hours aren’t really worth it.

So, tell her!

Encourage her by offering practical truth, such as, “God has given you all you need for life and godliness, so keep it up because God has equipped you!” Or tell her, “I know you must get tired and I want you to know that I see your good work and you glorify your Heavenly Father.”

Tell her, text her, email her, call her or write her a note!
Encourage one another and build one another up. 1 Thess. 5:11 [Click to Tweet]
Whichever way you choose to tell her she’s doing a great job, do it.

Your encouragement will help to build her up when she is feeling weary.

2. Pray for Her

I used to say, “I’ll pray for you,” and I meant it — I really meant it — and then I’d walk away and totally forget!

My great intention to pray got swallowed up in the great abyss of my forgetful brain or busy life. Anyone else? Has it ever happened to you?

I think it happens to all of us, so I’ve learned to be intentional with my good intentions! I pray right then and there. I text prayers. I email prayers.

Prayer is a beautiful way to encourage a woman who is serving and leading others.

Prayer is a beautiful way to encourage a woman who serves others. [Click to Tweet]
So, when you see her, pray for her right then and there — instead of focusing on her cute jeans or maybe how tired she looks, shift all those thoughts about her to prayers for her. And, then, let her know you prayed for her. Or, even better, put your arms around her and instead of talking to her, talk to God about her right there with her!

You don’t have to pray big and long — just a sincere offering to God on behalf of your sister. “Lord, help Joni today with all she is dealing with. Fill her where she is empty. Amen.”

Pray for each other so that you can live together whole and healed. James 5:16 MSG [Click to Tweet]
You can also text or email a prayer. Instead of texting, “I’m praying for you,” text the prayer to her. “Lord, be Paula’s strength today and give her favor and peace. Amen.” You get the idea. Pray for her and let her know she is prayed for.

“Pray for each other so that you can live together whole and healed.” James 5:16 MSG

3. Nominate Her

Okay, girls, this way to encourage just makes me want to cheer!

Did you know that womensministry.net is honoring women who serve others through 40 Under 40. It’s a campaign to acknowledge and celebrate women 40 or younger who are serving God by serving others through ministry.

Isn’t that cool?!?

I know several women I want nominated, and I bet you do too. What a soul-enriching way to say to a woman who ministers, “What you do matters!” and “You matter!”
There’s power in encouragement. It heartens, emboldens, and spurs us on when we are worn out! [Click to Tweet]
So, tell her, pray for her and then go to womensministry.net/40under40 to nominate her for this beautiful way to encourage her! (Hurry over there, girl! Nominations are only open until May 31!)

So, sisters, let’s “encourage one another and build one another up…” (1 Thessalonians 5:11), and “encourage each other daily while it is still called today.” (Hebrews 3:13 NIV)

And, what is so beautiful about encouraging someone else is it lifts your spirit too!

You will find that as you lift others up, you grow stronger in the process!
