Waiting for my coffee to finish brewing made me late to class. I did a clumsy dance all the way there as I attempted to hold all my books along with the piping hot (and dangerous) cup of coffee; the price was darn high to get that cup of coffee into my 8 AM class.  

But, it was worth it. No doubt. I knew that if I didn’t have it, I’d stumble through the day, a cloud would hang low over my day.

Coffee starts my day; I offer it to friends when they come over. I treat myself to coffee when I study or simply when I want a treat.  I need it; I enjoy it. It’s a faithful friend.

But, I need Jesus more than coffee.

My dependence on coffee – which, yes, probably needs to be addressed – ought to pale in comparison to my evident need for Christ.

My need for Christ and my awareness that He is due all honor and praise ought to lead me to start my day with Him. I ought to feel lost without the leading of the Spirit. My soul ought to crave my Lord first thing. Without Christ, the cloud of separation hovers; when the cloud descends, may I turn to Him. first. 

I simultaneously need and enjoy Him; sometimes enjoyment leads to need, whereas mostly, my need drives me and there I find joy. When I invite a friend over, may I not only pour a cup of coffee, but also invite Christ into our conversation – into our friendship.

I need Jesus more than coffee.

May my slight addiction to roasted coffee beans turn my heart to Him and draw me near.
