Jennifer’s 7 Favorite Books About Heaven

Jennifer's 7 Favorite Books About Heaven

These are some of my favorite books about Heaven. All of them, for one reason or another, really informed and helped shape my Heaven: When Faith Becomes Sight Bible study.

Some will make you think, some will make you cry, and some will make you say, “What? I never thought of that!” So, I included a variety, including two fiction books that will help awaken your imagination about Heaven. Here’s my list…

1. Heaven by Randy Alcorn

I found myself going back to this impressive tome over and over as I wrote the Heaven Bible study. It really helped clarify my understanding of Heaven. Randy is clear, thorough, and biblical. So, get ready to think and practice perseverance because this book has over 6,800 amazing pages!

2. Surprised by Hope by N.T. Wright

This deep and accessible book is written by an Anglican scholar and came in second for my most referred-to book on Heaven. Wright helped me understand the things that confused me when church teachings and Christian culture clashed. His biblical support of how Heaven gives us hope is brilliant.

3. All Things New by John Eldredge

Okay, this one just made me smile and imagine and long for Heaven more and more. In the way only John can, he made Heaven feel as close as your heartbeat, as comforting as a warm breeze on a sunny afternoon, and as real as the air you breathe. You will love his take and biblical anchoring.

4. Four Views on Heaven by John Feinberg

Put on your thinking cap for this one because there is definitely more than one view on Heaven, and this compilation helps you understand all perspectives. I appreciated John’s ability to help me understand how good hearts who are unified in Christ can come to different conclusions and still keep the central truths the same.

5. On Death by Timothy Keller

If Timothy Keller published his grocery list, I would read it, weep, and rededicate my life. He is just that good. And his book is so gentle, pastoral, and candid about the tough subject of death. It’s a great resource for understanding and accepting the role of death in our eternal life.

6. Safely Home by Randy Alcorn

Sometimes fiction sneaks into our hearts and teaches us when nonfiction can’t seem to penetrate our brains. That’s what happened to me when I read Safely Home years ago. It awakened my imagination for Heaven and gave me such an eternal perspective. Take a fiction vacation and end up where your heart longs to be … safely home.

7. The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis

Well, no book list of mine would be complete without my favorite dead author and his book, The Great Divorce, which is hands-down my very favorite of his fiction books. It’s an imaginative supposal of Heaven and Hell. Through entertaining and way-too-relatable characters, Lewis shows how grace is always inviting us to repent and experience the joy of God now and forever in Heaven.

My dear friend, either during or after you experience the Heaven Bible study, pick up one or all of these books and see how God can use these wonderful authors to fill in gaps, challenge your thinking, and invite you to know and love Him more.
