Update from the Laundromat

We are =
at a hotel in New Orleans right now.  It is so good to be back in =
the USA where we can flush the toilet paper and drink the water! But, I =
must say, I love Ecuador.  My heart is forever changed after being =
there. I am so grateful we have some new members of our family through =
Compassion, International; Martin and his 2 sisters.  He is the =
little boy who lives with his 12 year old sister and his 6 year old =
sister in Quito.  His 12 year old sister has become is mother, =
since their mother died three years ago. Their father left the family =
shortly after the mother died, and if not for the resourcefulness of a =
12 year old, a loving church, and Compassion,  I don’t know where =
those precious children would be.  But now, Martin is ours and we =
will sponsor their whole little family and keep them in our hearts. =

Anyway, tomorrow we are leaving on our family =
vacation.  We will all board a Carnival Cruise leaving from New =
Orleans, and be gone for 7 days [or more :)].  This will probably =
be one of the last whole family vacations for a while since Clay and =
Caroline are entering the grown-up world of full-time jobs in August, =
and Connor is entering high school and will become increasingly busy and =
more interested in his friends!

Lucy probably has forgotten us as she has been at =
Doggie Dream World, AKA, Beverly Cox’s home!  She loves being =
there. Man, are we grateful for Miss Beverly!

Well, =
we spent an hour at the Laundromat here in New Orleans washing our =
clothes from Ecuador so we could take them on the cruise.  I =
haven’t used a Laundromat in years, and I must say, I loved it!!  =
It was quick because Phil helped, and we just hung out!  =
Small pleasures!

Off to =
Walmart to buy sunscreen and then we will board the ship in the morning. =
So, bless you, all you wonderful friends.  I wish I could put =
each of you in my suitcase and sail the ocean with you!  Hope to =
post some pics at the ports.

What Angelina Jolie and I Have in Common

I wish I hadn’t turned on the TV this morning. The slow pace of summer made me think I could do such a risky thing. I awoke a little later than usual. I knew the kids were still asleep and knew Phil was already up. So, still lying in bed, I grabbed the remote and within seconds GMA appeared on the screen.

I was just in time to hear an interview with Angelina Jolie. She was introduced as one of the most beautiful women in the world. The interviewer went on to describe how she is starring in a new movie where she plays a spy. She does her own stunts; she is an amazing mother; she’s athletic; she’s smart; she’s articulate and she’s got a great figure. Whew!

Summer Afternoons, Good Shoes, and a Comfy Read

My favorite Henry James quote is, “Summer afternoon – Summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.”

“Well, my “summer afternoons” have been full this month. The long, lazy days of summer have afforded some time for reading, writing, playing, cleaning, organizing and traveling!

We ended June by attending ICRS in St. Louis where my Dr. Phil and I got to visit with my publisher and reconnect with lots of friends in the publishing world.  We had dinner with our pals from Harvest House, I signed books and had interviews.  It always inspires me to see how God is working in Christian books and music.

Just Scold Me Now

“Can you scold me right now?”  Those were Connor’s words as he walked into the living room.  “Connor,” I growled, “you are a bad boy!”  Of course, I was kidding; I was just responding to his humorous request for scolding.  Then he said, “Thanks. I just remembered I have homework.”

This ordinarily wouldn’t be a problem, but it was bedtime. And putting off homework until bedtime would be a problem. I asked if he was serious and with a grave tone of voice he said, “Totally.”  I think he expected a real scolding with a serious tone from me, but instead, Phil and I laughed. Phil told him to quickly shower and then he could knock it out. He went to the shower without words.
